Transformation of ammonium in the soil

 DMPP retards the naturally occurring transformation of ammonium (NH4) via nitrite into nitrate (NO3) by selectively inhibiting the activity of nitrifying bacteria (Nitrosomonas) over a period of 4 to 10 weeks
